89. Start the FLYlady routines

For the last two days, I’ve been working on getting myself into a better routine when it comes to balancing house work with regular work and all the things that come in between. My new philosophy around the house is ‘If you want something done, do it yourself’. No more waiting for other people to take the hint and get the finger out. I really hope that the FLYLady routines will help me get on the path to a stress free clean and tidy house.

The first part of the routine that I have undertaken is pretty simple, it’s something to get you up and out in the morning. One of the other motivational and triggering aspects of FLYLady are the e’mails which you receive throughout the day reminding you to get back into focus, declutter for 15 minutes, or provides you with some motivational dialog. Following the guidelines on the site, here’s a simplified guideline I’ve been trying to get down

Make your bed as soon as you get out of it (unless your DH is still there)

Shower and dress to shoes

Fix your hair and face

Swish and swipe

Reboot laundry

Breakfast, vitamins and water

Seems pretty obvious right? Things that you do anyways, or nearly anyways, but before now I’ve often ended up puttering about the house in no particular order, before realising that I need to be gone out the door 5 minutes ago, rush and forget to do half the stuff that I was meant to. Also, more importantly the before bedtime routine (which I haven’t figured out yet) gets you ready for the next day. Lunch made, books ready, clothes laid out. I’m hoping that this routine system will be extendable into both work and health aspects of my life. Now, I’m off to buy acontrol journal. You can follow FLYLady over on twitter too

22. Read at least one ‘non college related’ book for each month [7/33]

To get closer to completing this goal, in particular as I’m lagging behind, I’m compiling a list of books that I would like to read over the next year and 8 months. Amongst them I wanted to include some of those gems that have shaped the books after them, something with a bit more substance than the juicy Candice Bushnell I have been reading recently. These will be added to my list, alongside some satisfying romance and fantasy. According to Daniel S. Burt’s The Novel 100: A Ranking of Greatest Novels All Time the Top 10 of the literary novel genre written are:

1 Don Quixote Miguel de Cervantes
2 War and Peace Leo Tolstoy
3 Ulysses James Joyce
4 In Search of Lost Time Marcel Proust
5 The Brothers Karamazov Feodor Dostoevsky
6 Moby-Dick Herman Melville
7 Madame Bovary Gustave Flaubert
8 Middlemarch George Eliot
9 The Magic Mountain Thomas Mann
10 The Tale of Genji Murasaki Shikibu

Have I read any of them yet? No, I’m clearly undercultured :S Now, to leave back my overdue library books and pay some fines. War and Peace and Ulysses may be a lot to take on, I’ve started both before, but I’ll be happy if I at least give them a bit of time and then give them a proper read when I’m finished with my phd.

This morning I played the English Vocabulary game on FreeRice. For each meaning of a word you get correct, FreeRice will donate 20 grains of rice throught the UN World Food Program. I learned that I can figure out a lot of the meanings of words that I don’t necessaryl recognise. It’s a good exercise in vocab, and might help me finally finish a crossword. There are a whole bunch of subjects you can play from basic maths to famous paintings or languages. I plucked up the courage to try the French, and supprisingly I could answer some of the questions. The games are quite smart in that the difficulty changes as you progress, so if you start getting things wrong they go down a few levels to help you out. Pretty fun, and if I play another couple of sessions I should have my 10,000 grains. I wonder how many grains are needed to fill a bowl for a decent meal?

Last year on the 1st of January I began the 100 things in 1001 days challenge. The challenge was initially created by Michael Green

According to the website…

The Mission:
Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.

The Criteria:
Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).

Why 1001 Days?
Many people have created lists in the past - frequently simple goals such as New Year’s resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organising and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.

It seems like a good time of year to take some time and reflect on my progress

Bold: Successful
Underline: I’m going to focus my energy on these
Italics: Underway

Over the past three weeks, I’d say I’ve chomped my way through 12 tablets and 40-something dissolvable sopladeines. Of course there have been side-effects, in fact right now I feel pretty queasy, but it’s better than dealing with that horrid horrid pain that comes with a throat infection. At least now, after prolonged use, I can finally drink back a nice plink plink fizzy sopladene concoction without retching. Yes, it makes me retch, or at least it used to. I’d sip sip sip slowly and shudder each time with the taste, that worked at first. The taste though? Ugh. Gross. How to get past that.. Well, and I have to thank the other half for this: When you’re drinking it back, slowly, sip by sip, you should think of a really strong flavor. Imagine yourself eating whatever it is, visualise, sensualise the experience. This doesn’t get rid of all the nastyness, espically as sipping at the tortous drink means that eventually your brain realises the trickery at hand and lets you sense the grosness. So, what to do, how to get it down the hatch before your brain gets wind of the plan. Find a spot, anywhere, something in the room, far away or close by and stare at it. If you concentrate with all your might, you can toss the whole retched lot back in a few gulps, wash it back with some water, sit back for few minutes and then enjoy its soothing pain release. As for the long term side-effects, like this queasy feeling I’ve got, I haven’t figured that out yet, and I hope that I’m better before I get a chance to.

In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan, armed with a reel-to-reel tape deck, snuck into John Lennon’s hotel room in Toronto and convinced John to do an interview about peace. 38 years later, Jerry has produced a film about it. Using the original interview recording as the soundtrack, director Josh Raskin has woven a visual narrative which tenderly romances Lennon’s every word in a cascading flood of multipronged animation. Raskin marries the terrifyingly genius pen work of James Braithwaite with masterful digital illustration by Alex Kurina, resulting in a spell-binding vessel for Lennon’s boundless wit, and timeless message.
